Where to Place a Vastu Tortoise, and Why North

The tradition, the reasoning behind it, and an honest note on what it does and does not claim to do.

The tortoise is one of the few Vastu objects with a consistent traditional placement, which makes it easier to write about honestly than most.

The convention is north, and the reasoning given is that the north is associated with Kubera and with the flow of wealth into a household. A metal tortoise, facing into the home rather than out of it, is held to steady that flow. Some traditions place it in the north-east instead, near water; some put it on a dish of water outright.

The tortoise itself carries meaning independent of direction. It is the second avatar of Vishnu, and the shell it withdraws into is the standard image for withdrawing the senses inward. Read that way, the object is a reminder rather than an instrument, which is probably the most defensible way to keep one.

An honest note on what it claims. We sell the kachua because it is a beautiful piece of granulation work and because it is the single most-requested housewarming gift we make. We are not going to tell you it will change your finances. The tradition is real, the craft is real, and what you take from the object is properly your business.

Practically: keep it off the floor, keep it out of a bathroom or a bedroom, and keep it clean. Those three the traditions agree on.
